Our heads are still reeling from the news that South African Sports Association for Physically Disabled (SASAPD) General Manager, Iris Cunningham, has resigned her post. Sports mad Iris participated in Hockey, Swimming, Tennis, Chess and Badminton at High School and achieved Provincial Colours (Northern Transvaal) in Hockey and Chess. She was introduced to disability sport in 1978 when she met her ex-husband, a disabled athlete, and became involved in the Natal Sports Association for Physically Disabled as an assistant to the athletes and undertook courses in both coaching and officiating in Athletics for the Disabled, achieving Level 1 status in both.
In 1981 she co-founded the Pinetown Sports Club for the Disabled in Natal and between 1981 and 1984 served as the Secretary and later, as Chairperson, represented the Club on the Natal Regional Council. Iris was elected as Secretary of Natal in 1982 and Chairman in 1984 – a position she held until 1991 when she was elected National Secretary of the SASAPD.
