The seventh annual Hope-Mandeville Disabilities Career Expo was this year hosted by the SABC Foundation. The 2018 SABC Disability Summit was held on April 18 at the SABC head offices in Auckland Park, Johannesburg. Various organisations offering learnerships and career opportunities for students with disabilities as well as organisations owned by people with disabilities attended.
Representatives of the Wheelchair Tennis South Africa (WTSA) association were present and demonstrated the talents of its tennis players. The students were given the opportunity to interact with the organisations and attend a number of presentations to assist them in finding future employment.
The annual event started when the Hope School for children with disabilities in Westcliff teamed up with Mandeville Disability Swimming club. Proceeds from the event goes to the club, which trains swimmers with disabilities up to Paralympian level.

While this year’s event was a one-day affair, many of the previous exhibitors were present, such as eDEAF. The SAB Foundation ensured that its award winners were able to attend – which they would not have been able to afford otherwise.
Co-founder of Smergos Nick Smit notes that the SAB Foundation has made it possible for the wheelchair accessory manufacturer to attend the Summit free of charge. He says: “It is a very important event and the exposure has been good.”
While the Summit was aimed at students, many people with disabilities attended to network with other organisations and listen to some of the discussions.
