The Women’s Achievement Network for Disability (WAND) returns to Artscape, Cape Town, in August to participate in the Women’s Humanity Arts Festival. This fourth Annual Celebration and Empowerment Workshop will take place on August 2 from 9h00 to 13h00 in the Opera Bar.
WAND is an initiative whereby women with disabilities give back to teenagers with disabilities. In attendance will be 70 teenage girls with disabilities between the ages of 13 and 18 years from various special-needs schools in the Cape Town area.
The workshop acts as a platform to show these teens that they be successful and live full lives despite the barriers of gender and disability. It aims to assist the girls in celebrating self-acceptance and to unlock their voices, encouraging them to realise that they have “beauty, strength, and the potential to develop and become a competent and confident learner, student, entrepreneur, friend, mother and career woman”.
The workshop is facilitated by two business women with disabilities, namely Karen Smit and Dr Marlene le Roux. The girls are given the opportunity to share their challenges, stories of hope, desires and dreams. As they discover and start using their unique strengths, they develop increased confidence and motivation.
This empowerment experience encourages these young girls to create purpose for their lives; motivating them to turn dreams into goals and to become the best they can be.
