The annual Wings for Life World Run took place on Sunday, May 7. Participant from around the world attempted to outrace the virtual Catcher Car through the mobile app. While the race could be joined from anywhere, Red Bull South Africa hosted two app events in South Africa, which provided racers with the opportunity to celebrate the event in style.
The first was held in Johannesburg at the Roodepoort Ruimsig Stadium while the second was in Cape Town at the Green Point Urban Park. The Rolling Inspiration team attended the app event in Cape Town.
The park was abuzz as racers gathered for the run. A member of the Red Bull South Africa team guided the racers through a quick warm up before everyone took in their positions at the start. The racers in wheelchairs were at the front to ensure a safe start.
While the distance each participant travels will vary on their speed, a roughly five kilometre distance was mapped. Racers ran this route on a loop until they were caught by the Catcher Car.
The route exited the park alongside the DHL stadium, travelled along the Sea Point Promenade before doubling back to the Park.
As racers were caught by the Catcher Car, they returned to Park to collect their medals and complimentary Red Bull drinks. Members from QASA were in attendance to hand out medals. The funds raised through entry tickets and donations will fund various research projects searching for a cure for spinal cord injuries.
