The service at The Capital on the Park makes this hotel exceptional

The Capital on the Park hotel on Katherine Street, Sandton, boasts a five-star rating. It clearly was, in many ways. Let me explain. Too often, as wheelchair users, we choose upper market facilities as we assume that they will be accessible and the service will be impeccable.

In all my years of travelling, I have found that a one-star facility can be as accessible as a five-star. Of course then the service is often just one-star in terms of its delivery and execution.

Service is second on my list in terms of an absolute requirement in my accommodation seeding. Obviously, access for a wheelchair user is most important. My apartment (701) at The Capital on the Park was luxurious with a roll-in shower – suiting my requirements. The door into the bathroom should open wider, but is easily removable by maintenance staff if necessary.

The room is spacious, and even has a washing machine, tumble dryer, and all the facilities necessary to cook and bake … not that I have ever cooked or baked in a hotel room. The dining room is easily accessible and tables have no obstacles underneath. The food is fantastic. The view is impressive for a concrete jungle location.

Service is where they come up trumps. From the security to the front desk manager, everybody is keen to assist and no request is too big of an ask.

I needed a transfer onto my shower chair in the morning, “no problem, a porter is on his way”. I needed someone to assist at the breakfast buffet, “how can I help you sir”. Their help was pleasant, always asking the right questions.

If you are feeling flush, want to spoil yourself, indulge in great service, and the offering of entertainment, a swimming pool, great food and an accessible room on request, give The Capital on the Park Hotel a go. You will have fun and be spoilt with great service. Well done team!
