The return of the 15th annual South African Sport Awards saw the country’s top sport and recreation practitioners and members of the media being celebrated at the Durban ICC. The theme for this year’s awards was Celebrating Sports Excellence, focusing on 2021: the year of Mama Charlotte Maxeke.

Following the two-year hiatus due to the national state of disaster, the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture was able to host the awards again. An evening that boasted the country’s top athletes and the display of their resilience, these awards also drew attention to the 2019 Olympic year that recognised the outstanding achievements from the Olympic and Paralympic athletes.

The big winners of the evening were Tatjana Schoenmaker, Siya Kolisi, Bianca Buitendag and Ntando Mahlangu, to name a few. All winners were honoured due to their demonstration of resilience during the most difficult period of their sporting career. The Sportsman of the Year with a Disability was Pieter du Preez, while Anrunè Liebenberg-Weyers was awarded the Sportswomen of the Year with a Disability.
