Canyon Coal mining company’s website is now fully accessible to people who are deaf, blind, colour-blind or partially blind – a first among South African mining companies. It worked with the South African National Deaf Association to create the website that meets the South African National Council for the Blind’s requirements.
Mining company Canyon Coal supports the campaign to make South African Sign Language the 12th official language. All content on the website has been translated to South African Sign Language. The videos were recorded in the Johnathan Andrews Academy studio and specific design methods were used to ensure user-friendliness for people who are blind. The project is in support of the campaign aiming to make South African Sign Language the 12th official language.
“We hear their voices and shoulder the responsibility of diminishing their barriers as much as we can,” says Vuslat Bayoglu, executive chairman of Canyon Coal.
“We are aware that taking these baby steps is not a ‘favour’ but is our ‘obligation’ to South African people. We hope to spark sensitivity and responsibility for people with disabilities with our website,” he concludes.
