As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, Eric Miles Cheshire Homes (EMCH) unveiled a gigantic QR Code that can be seen from the sky. At 100 square metres, it is the largest code in South Africa. It can be scanned with your phone camera to see where the code leads.

This is only the first in many celebrations planned for the 50th anniversary. In March, EMCH board members will participate in the Cape Town Cycle Tour while pulling EMCH resident, Jeff Kao, in a custom buggy for the full 109-kilometre route.

In June, they will host a 70s disco party, and in October, they will host their Annual Fete, which has been running for over 30 years. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for updates.

“We have staff who have worked here for just under 30 years and some residents have resided here for almost 40 years. This is of course a very exciting anniversary for them especially,” says Carla Hanekom, Home Manager at EMCH.

“The newbies feel assured that they will have their forever home and will be well taken care of because of such established roots.”

Established in 1976, the home receives grants from the Department of Social Development, which covers about 20 percent of its operations. Donations and funds raised through their events cover the rest.

For the next 50 years, Carla hopes for “sustainability and superior care”. You can get involved and help achieve this goal!

“We welcome volunteers to help in our charity shops, to do activities with the residents, and extra hands at fundraising events are always welcome,” Carla shares.

“On the donation side, we always have a need, and anyone can get involved. From a box of milk per month to a new industrial tumble dryer, we have a wish list item to suite every kind of donor,” she adds.

“Besides being a registered NPO, we’re also a registered PBO which means we can give Section 18A tax certificates to donors,” she concludes. For more information, visit their website at www.ericmiles.org.
