For many, the new year is an opportunity to remake themselves from losing weight to finding their dream job. We often make big promises to ourselves, but the challenge is keeping them throughout the year. Here are some ways to ensure your New Year’s Resolutions are actually kept.

Be realistic
“Go big or go home” is a good approach to life, but perhaps not for your goals in 2022. Instead of promising to become fit for a marathon, consider increasing the number of times you exercise a week or the intensity of your exercise. A smaller goal might also feel less intimidating or easier to achieve, which can help you stay motivated.
Turn goals into steps
One of the big reasons why we fail to achieve our goals is because we don’t know where to start. Consider the smaller steps that you need to take every day, week or month to achieve your goal. For example, if you want write a book, start with the first chapter or an outline and allocate time each day or week to writing a little more.
Check in with yourself
It’s not strange to find ourself giving up on your goal a couple of months into the new year. Whether it is because we aren’t making enough progress or life get busy, it can be tough to stay focused. Setting monthly or quarterly “check-ins” could be a great way to measure your progress, refocus or adjust your plan so that you can achieve your goal.
Get a resolution buddy
It is much easier to remain focused on our goals if someone holds us accountable. Find a friend or family member who will be willing to achieve your goal with you. They can either strive for the same goal or simply hold you accountable by checking in with your progress.
Do it for yourself
The most important thing is to achieve the goal for yourself. Make sure that you’ve set a goal that you really want and not something that you feel you have to. If you are happy with your weight (even the few kilos that you picked up over the December holidays), don’t make a resolution to lose weight. Rather, focus on something that would be meaningful for you to achieve.
