The Wings for Life World Run will again take place to help raise funds for the Wings for Life Foundation, which is working towards a cure for spinal cord injuries. All funds raised through entry fees and donations will go to the Foundation. This year, the event will take place on Sunday, 7 May 2023.
Participants from across the globe will gather at the same time, irrespective of time zone, to outrun (or roll) the Catcher Car, which acts as the finish line. Unlike traditional races, participants will be running away from – as opposed to running towards – the finish line. When the Catcher Car passes the participate, their run will end.
The in-person events have a physical vehicle passing the participants. Alternatively, you can join the race using the Wings for Life World Run apps, which will track the participant’s progress and notify them when the virtual car has passed.
Unfortunately, the physical event held in Centurion prior to the COVID pandemic is still yet to return. However, participants in Cape Town and Johannesburg can join the App Run events. Similar to the in-person events, participants will run the same route and enjoy refreshment stations. A key difference, however, is that participants will still need to carry their mobile phones to have their progress monitored, and be notified when the Catcher Car has passed.
If you are unable to join the App Runs, which will be in Green Point Urban Park and Roodepoort Ruimsig Stadium, you can still participate in your area with your app.
