In September, a group of passionate amputees will embark on a 15-day, 6 000-kilometre motorbike tour across South Africa to raise awareness, bring hope to amputees and raise funding for those in need on a journey dubbed Wheels of Hope.
The goal is to fund 20 prosthetic refits or 10 new limbs in partnership with Rejuvenate – a non-profit dedicated to providing mobility to those who lack access.
A well-fitting prosthetic assists with confidence, comfort and independence. For a proper, pain-free fit, prosthetics should ideally be refitted every two to five years. Without refitting, the person’s mobility and quality of life can decline.
Both a new prosthetic and refitting are expensive. A refit can cost upwards of R50 000 while a prosthesis can be more than R100 000. Through Wheels of Hope, organisers aim to make both more accessible.
The team includes 10 amputee riders, a support crew and media team who will be documenting the trip. Local bikers were be joining along the route.
The bikers will set out from Centurion on 20 September heading to Upington before travelling down the West Coast to Cape Town and back up along the East Coast through East London, Durban and St Lucia. Bikers will drive through Nelspruit, Polokwane and Naboomspruit before finishing in Centurion again on 4 October.
