From improving focus to upper body strength, adaptive archery is a great, inclusive sport for people with disabilities
There’s something powerful about drawing a bow, taking aim and releasing an arrow with precision. Archery demands focus, patience and control. In return, it teaches archers confidence and determination. It helps build upper-body strength, coordination, and stability, while also improving concentration and mental discipline.
To explore the sport, Adaptive Sports Fund hosted an Adaptive Archery Day at the Odyssey Archery Range, which was very welcoming. Participants of all abilities had the opportunity to step up to the line, draw their bow and shoot at the target.
For many, it was their first time holding a bow. With that came a mix of excitement and uncertainty. It didn’t take long for hesitation to turn into determination.
All the necessary equipment was provided with the invaluable guidance of Shaun, a Paralympian, who coached and supported participants throughout the session. His expertise, patience and encouragement helped each archer understand the fundamentals of adaptive techniques. He made the learning process both accessible and enjoyable.
Archery is uniquely suited to adaptive sport. With the ability to modify equipment and technique, participants can shoot from seated positions, use assistive release aids or adapt their grip. This flexibility makes the sport highly inclusive.
What stood out most on the day was the sense of focus and calm that settled over the range. In a world that often feels fast- paced and overwhelming, archery requires you to slow down, breathe and be fully present in the moment. Each shot becomes a personal challenge of steadying the hands, aligning the target and trusting the release.
The breakthrough moment for many came when their first arrow hit the target; when they realised that they can do this! From there, the confidence just grew. Laughter, encouragement, and friendly competition filled the air as archers began to find their groove.
The supportive environment at Odyssey Archery Range played a key role in making the day a success. A heartfelt thank you to the team for creating a welcoming and accessible space where everyone felt comfortable to try, learn, and grow. Their guidance and enthusiasm ensured that each participant could safely enjoy the experience and leave with a sense of achievement.
As always, events like this would not be possible without the backing of our incredible sponsors: Verder, Joey Evans, and the STM Team. Their continued support allows Adaptive Sports Fund to introduce new sports and opportunities to our community, helping more people discover what they are capable of.
At Adaptive Sports Fund, we believe that sport has the power to unlock potential. Whether you hit the bullseye or not, stepping up and taking that first shot is already a victory.
