Disability Driving Hand Controls manufacture and install hand controls to enable paraplegics, quadriplegics and amputees to get back behind the wheel. Founder Chris Haskins started the business after his own injury jeopardised his ability to drive.
“I was in a motorcycle accident in 2020, six years ago. I had been a heavy duty diesel mechanic. Suddenly losing my ability to walk, and my job of 34 years, made me feel like life was over for me. It really affected me emotionally,” Chris reflects.
“It’s tough, but we have to be positive and move forward. Never give up! I started my business six months after getting out the hospital. I needed to drive again, and I knew I could help other’s in my situation,” he adds.
Getting back behind the wheel allows wheelchair users and amputees to regain much of their independence.
Chris shares his advice for getting started when you want to get back on the road: “When looking at getting hand controls, decide on the vehicle that you are going to feel comfortable in. Think about the height of the vehicle and the available space for a wheelchair. In my opinion, the smaller SUVs are the way to go. They offer a fair amount of space for wheelchair or walker.”
“Should you choose my company for your hand driving controls, I offer a selection of hand controls to choose from. I work from my premises based in Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal. I service the whole of KwaZulu-Natal. I am very reasonably priced and thrive to give my customers only the best service,” he adds.
Most of Chris’s current business comes from major dealerships – a testament to his quality of work. For more information, contact Chris on 065 097 6367.
