As we go into the school holidays and families find themselves on the roads, QASA encourages drivers and passengers to Buckle Up and avoid the devastation of a possible spine injury.
Wearing a seatbelt can significantly reduce the changes of sustaining a spinal cord injury in the case of a car crash. Currently, car crashes are the second leading cause of spinal cord injuries in South Africa (second only to interpersonal violence like gun shot or stab wounds).
Spinal cord injuries can be devastating to the individual and the family. It not only results in loss of mobility, but can result in losing employment, other health complications and big financial burdens.
QASA is an organisation dedicated to supporting quadriplegics and paraplegics to live their lives to their full potential. QASA urges you to: “Buckle-Up, We don’t want new members!”. Rather, the organisation would like to see more people practice safe driving on the roads – including wearing a seatbelt!
On Youth Day weekend, the organisation deployed members to service stations in the Western Cape and Gauteng to raise awareness and get pledges from members of the public. The QuadPara Association of the Western Cape (QAWC) team visited the Engen Winelands 1 Stop North (heading towards Paarl).
QASA extends its gratitude to the service stations that allowed the organisation to participate, but also to the members who offered up their time for this road safety prevention campaign .
“A big thank you to the Engen Winelands 1 Stop North and Engen Skystop Garage for providing QASA and its members with a platform to advocate for safer road use. We believe it is a testament to their dedication to preserving lives and keeping their customers safe!”
“To all the members who braved the weather, early morning and long day, a big thank you! Your dedication has helped raise awareness of a very important cause and potentially saved lives. Our organisation could not do the incredible work that it does without you,” the QASA team states.
If you or someone you know do suffers a spinal cord injury, we encourage you to reach out to the organisation at info@qasa.co.za or 031 767 0352. Visit their website for more information on their projects and services.
