Rainbow Line Dancers is inviting people with disabilities, include wheelchair users, to join the chair dancing classes with a trained instructor held at the Ferndale Recreation Centre in Randburg, Johannesburg.
Leon Nel, dance instructor at Rainbow Line Dancers, says: “We have so much fun line dancing and believe that everyone can dance. Wheelchair and disability dancing is big in Europe and the United States, so why not in South Africa?”
“We are looking at starting dance classes for people in wheelchairs and with disabilities,” Leon continues. The group offers social and competitive dancing with affiliations to the Gold Line Dance group in the Netherlands.
In September, Rainbow Line Dancers plan to welcome a line dance judge from Denmark for their annual competition who will judge their dancers, but also train the dancing instructors in the art of chair dancing.
“Currently, we have a young lady with down syndrome doing lessons and competitions,” Leon adds. “She love it and come to life – smiling, shaking and spreading love for dance.”
He concludes: “A huge thank you for the donations received so far. Every Rand helps towards getting the wheelchair and down syndrome leaners to our event.”
The chair dancing sessions are held on Saturday mornings from 9 AM at the Ferndale Recreation Centre. For more information, contact Leon on 082 349 5424 or at leonnel@tiscali.co.za. Or visit the Rainbow Line Dancers website here.
