Andy Smith has created a phone and tablet charger that connects to your wheelchair or scooter battery to act as a power bank. The Wheelchair and Scooter Usb Port (Wasup) was inspired by Andy’s own phone use and his 48 years in a power wheelchair.
“I use my phone a lot and it would often go flat. Then I would have to put it on charge somewhere. I thought, ‘I have a huge amount of power in my wheelchair batteries. How can I use it to charge my phone?’” Andy explains.
“I made up a contraption involving crocodile clips and a cigarette lighter socket, connected it to my batteries and plugged in a USB charger, which worked for me for quite a while.”
After some enquiries from friends and a few more prototypes, Andy manufactured a design that works on most wheelchairs and scooters. The Wasup plugs into the charging socket of your chair or scooter and can charge a phone or tablet, run a small fan, light or heating devices. It is priced at R450.
