The Enable Centre will be hosting an in-person Caregiver Support Course over the next six weeks starting 30 July in Cape Town. The aim is to empower spouses and family members with expert guidance, emotional support and practical tools.
“The programme offers a safe space to share experiences, reflect on role and relationship changes, and reconnect with themselves. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the impact of caregiving on mental, physical, and emotional health and learn practical coping strategies,” shares Teneille Evans, clinical and neuropsychologist at The Enable Centre.
“It also aims to strengthen communication in family and social relationships, and explore resources to ease financial and time pressures. It is hoped that caregivers will leave with a deeper understanding of the difficulties they have faced, gain a stronger sense of community and ultimately become more equipped and empowered in their roles.”
While there is a lot of focus placed on the individual who sustains a disability, there isn’t always adequate support for the family or spouse who suddenly needs to take on a caregiver role.
“Both in my research and clinical practice, I have witnessed the vast difficulties caregivers experience when taking on such a sudden life changing role. I have also seen the incredible resilience that caregivers hold and believe this programme provides a space to strengthen that even further,” Teneille shares.
“In rehab, there is naturally a great deal of focus on the client. However, anyone working within the field will attest to how central and valuable caregivers are to our clients’ journey. This course turns the spotlight to the caregiver, to give them a space to be seen, heard and further supported,” she adds.
The course is R1 500 with payment plans available to those who cannot afford the once-off payment. Spots are limited and you are encouraged to book today by contacting Teneille on teneille@enablecentre.org or 082 826 7731.
