Rolling Inspiration (RI): Why does AKOS BIO use a “low and slow” approach with a personalised treatment plan?
AKOS BIO (AB): We use an evidenced informed “start low and go slow” approach to create a personalised treatment plan based on each patient’s needs and treatment goals. These goals may include reducing spasms and seizures, relieving nerve pain and discomfort, improving sleep and discomfort and maintaining good daytime function.
Each person’s body responds differently to treatment. The medicine is started at a very low dose and increased gradually until the most effective dose is found. This is called the therapeutic window. This careful approach helps achieve the best therapeutic benefit while reducing the risk of side effects such as drowsiness, slower thinking or unwanted psychoactive effects.
Patients are supported throughout treatment by AKOS BIO pharmacists, the prescribing doctor and the wider AKOS BIO team.
RI: What are the recommended waiting times before increasing the dosage, and why?
AB: We generally recommend increasing the dose by 0.1 ml every two to three days until the therapeutic benefit is achieved. This allows the central nervous system time to adjust and gives the patient and clinician time to assess how well the treatment is working and how well it is being tolerated.
Increasing the dose gradually also reduces the risk of raising the dose too quickly and causing unwanted effects such as drowsiness. For older patients, those with neurological vulnerability, or those who are particularly sensitive to THC, treatment may begin with one evening dose before moving to two or three doses per day.
C100 NOIA and B25 NOIA may also work well together with C100 NOIA helping to calm nerve hypersensitivity and reduce muscle spasms, while B25 NOIA may help relieve pain and support sleep.
