This month, spine health is the topic of discussion. Even with a spinal cord injury, there is a lot that you can do to take care of your spine. Most importantly, being seated correctly in your wheelchair can have a big impact on your spine’s health.
Incorrect seating, which includes leaning in either side, sliding from the seat, or tilting the pelvic, can lead to difficulty breathing, poor digestion and urinary tract issues, increase the risk of tipping, as well as injuring the spine further.
Ideally, wheelchair users should strive for a neutral seating position during which your pelvis or hip bones are level with your spine; your legs are parallel with each other and the seat; and your feet are well supported.
There are a few ways in which to improve your posture. A good place to start is to strengthen your core and back muscles. This can be done with some simple exercises include crunches, trunk extension and twists. As you become stronger, you can make the exercises more challenging by adding resistant bands or weights.
Another essential way to improve your posture is to ensure that you have the correct equipment. Does your wheelchair support your back appropriately? Does your cushion support your hips?
As we age, we might need new or adapted equipment. Be sure to consult a medical professional and seating specialist when purchasing equipment.
