Through a fictionalised retelling of real-life experiences, Palesa Mathibe unmasks the challenge of accessing inclusive scales. The Weight is Over is part literary work, part advocacy and completely heartfelt as it follows the young Zandi through her life as a wheelchair user. The continuous mystery of her true weight folds around big life events to highlight how a simple number can help form a sense of self.
“I share personal stories, insights and a call to action that sheds light on the barriers faced by persons with disabilities, and what true inclusion, awareness, education and health equity should look like. The story also promotes values of representation, dignity and health inclusion especially around access to medical tools such as wheelchair-scales, for young and adult readers alike,” Palesa shares.
The Weight is Over is available as an e-book for purchase at a list of publisher, which you can find here.
