Veganuary encourages people to avoid animal product for January so that they might appreciate the benefits a plant-based diet can offer. This is highly recommended for people with spinal cord injuries who have a neurogenic bladder and/or bowel.
“If you are going to look after your bowel for the rest of your life, you have got to eat plenty of vegetables. If you can transition to a plant-based diet, that is even better,” Dr Virginia Wilson said when addressing bowel health.
A plant-based diet can help you maintain a healthy weight and avoid obesity-related complications such as Type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure. The diet rich in fibre and vitamins will also ensure you have the right nutrients, and keep your bowel movements as normal and regular as possible. It is still recommended to follow the other tips that Dr Wilson shared.
If you want to try the trend, consider replacing your meats with beans, which offers the same amount of protein with added fibres, iron, calcium and magnesium. Experiment with new vegetables or unique combinations with fruit or vegetable salad bowls.
Focus on introducing yogurt, which is really good for your gut health. Avoid flavoured or sweetened yogurts as these usually have a high sugar content.
Whether you continue with the diet or not, Veganuary is sure to leave you feeling re-energised and inspired with all the possibilities that a plant-based diet offers you. Your gut and bowel will thank you!
