Mia le Roux was crowned Miss South Africa 2024 and made history as the first women with a disability to be awarded the title. Mia has a hearing impairment and makes use of a cochlear implant. Her win is praised as an act of inclusivity, paving the way for future contestants with disabilities to pursue their dreams.

In a social media post, Mia said: “Last night (10 August), we created a new generation of believers. Every little girl out there who has felt different because they are not what society expects them to be will realise they are so wildly capable, just like I am.”

Mia took to her social media this week to promote Casual Day happening on 6 September 2024. The theme for this year is “I See You”; going beyond the act of seeing, but recognising the inherent worth, dignity and uniqueness of each person. She encouraged others to keep working for their dreams even if they had to work harder than others.

Mia writes: “To my community, you are seen, you are beautiful and you are worthy. If you have a dream in your heart, it is there for a reason. Keep working for it, even if you have to work 10 times harder, it is okay. It’s about your journey, not the journey of others.”

Congratulations to Mia and thank you for presenting the community. May this lead to even more disabilities represented.
