The Enable Initiative is the non-profit division of the Enable Centre, an outpatient physical and cognitive rehabilitation facility in Cape Town. It was established by a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals who have a shared passion for treating individuals with complex neurological and orthopaedic conditions. Funds, raised by the Enable Initiative, support the organisation’s vision of bridging the gap between public and private healthcare in South Africa to make therapy accessible to all.

One way in which the organisation is achieving this aim is through the Equal Access Programme, which assists in subsidising the cost of therapy to individuals from low socio-economic backgrounds. Eligibility for the programme is based on household income and reviewed by the clinical team.

Dubem is one of many beneficiaries of this programme. At the age of 18 months, Dubem was hospitalised with acute transverse myelitis of her cervical spinal cord (inflammation of the spinal cord) which caused paralysis of her body, arms and legs. Thanks to the donations received she now benefits from weekly speech therapy, physiotherapy and occupational therapy sessions. The team at the centre look to optimise Dubem’s recovery and function by combining a science-driven approach with the latest technology and innovative techniques.

The Enable Initiative has also funded successful rehabilitation outreach clinics in the community of Drakenstein, Paarl. This has been a successful means of making therapy more accessible. Enable aims to expand its services to more under resourced and serviced communities in the Western Cape.

The Enable Initiative is looking forward to growing these services and becoming one step closer to achieving its goal of providing therapy for all, however we need your support. If you are interested in being part of this change, please contact us at admin@enablecentre.org or 021 879 1062.
