Speaking at the 2022 Inclusive Africa Conference, which was held in Kenya, Christopher Patnoe, senior program manager at Google, said that there were trillions in businesses opportunity for people with disabilities.

“There’s over 100 million people with disabilities in Africa alone. There’s US$ 8 trillion (R137 trillion) in business opportunity around the world for people with disabilities and their friends, and family. That’s real,” he said.

The annual conference aims to create dialogue on how the digital landscape can be more inclusive to people with disabilities. Key points that were raised in the 2022 conference included the role people with disabilities can play in developing or reviewing inclusive technology, and the benefits of a more inclusive approach.

“Building tools in Africa solves problems in other places. Something we solve here, in Africa, can impact the lives of people in Thailand. It can, frankly, help people in America. The solutions are common. The constraints are common; no matter where you are,” Christopher explained.

“The most important thing is that you start and you start inclusively. You build with the community, You hire the community. You design with the community. And understand what the problems are and solve them together. And you don’t have to do it alone,” he concluded.

The conference is scheduled to return in 2023 on May 30 and 31. The in-person event will be in Kenya, but can also be joined virtually.
