Damage to the spine can be caused by many things including degenerative conditions or trauma. In South Africa, the top three causes include interpersonal violence (like gunshot or stab wounds), road crashes and falls – all of which could be prevented or lessened through precautions.

#1 Violence

Interpersonal violence surpassed road crashes, the global leading cause of spinal cord injuries (SCIs), and is now the number one cause of spine trauma in South Africa. You are more likely to become a wheelchair user from a gunshot or stab wound than anything else. Worse yet, this interpersonal violence is completely preventable!

To address interpersonal violence, communities need to band together. This could include de-escalating heated confrontations, protecting vulnerable groups, establishing community safety programmes and educating its people on the potential harms.

#2 Road crashes

Whether you are a driver or a road user, you have a high chance of sustaining a paralysing injury to the spine when you are involved in a crash. While accidents happen, many are preventable. It starts with buckling up – a simple act that can save lives and ensure you aren’t severely injured in a crash.

Drivers can also ensure that they keep their eyes on the road at all times, keep a safe following distance and drive below the speed limit. They should also ensure that their vehicle is roadworthy.

Most importantly, never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Even the slightest amount of alcohol in your system can slow your reaction time – and on the road, a few seconds can be the difference between walking or not!

#3 Falls

Whether you fall from a height or simply a short flight of stairs, landing badly can severely harm your spine. It is always recommended to wear the necessary safety equipment when working or exploring heights. Go slow and ensure your feet are steadily placed.

When walking up steps, be sure to hold onto the railing. Always wear shoes with good grip and avoid wet areas. If you plan on exploring unknown waters, always check the depth before diving.

An SCI is a life-altering condition that comes with many complications. So take the necessary precautions!
